Stripes Theater Performance

Sarah Hayward created a theater show called “Stripes: The Mystery Circus”. She wanted to capture the live event performance for use to promote the show.

One challenge was audio, since the performance required many costume changes and a on-person microphone would not work. Several off stage microphones were set up to capture the best audio possible in this live theater event.

For Sarah to choose the shots she wanted, she received a link to an online video where she could see her entire performance. She then submitted the different segments she wanted and the short highlight video was created and sent back to her digitally.

Baristas Coffee

Problem: The client needed a few things:

  • A video that could be looped
  • A demonstration of their coffee machine in action
  • A video that could demonstrate without using audio
  • A video that could be put onto an iPad

Solution:

  • Use text to point out the features of the machine
  • Use motion with the camera to bring some “action” to an otherwise still machine
  • Convert the files to an iPad friendly video format

Peter’s Handyman Service Promo

Problem: Peter’s Handyman Service needed a video to help brand their company and portray an air of professionalism. Being a handyman, the owner Peter is much more comfortable working with tools than talking to a camera.

Solution: First, get some merchandise with the Peter’s Handyman Services corporate logo and have Peter wear it. Second, take a small mix of his tools and use it as the background. Third, incorporate some smooth camera movements on a slider to give that extra touch of motion. Fourth, keep the sentences shorts and switch up camera angles often in order to allow Peter to deliver the lines one by one.

Shannon Falls Summer Vacation ESL Trip

Problem: The client needed an event video to highlight one of the scenic places their summer vacation ESL (English as a Second Language) school visits. There is also a need to give even coverage to all students.

Solution: Get some nice beauty shots of the water falls, streams, and nature in general. Make sure to get group shots to make sure that every student appears in the video several times.

Common Kitchen Video Tour

Problem: Needed potential customers to be able to take a tour of the kitchen space without actually going to the kitchen space.

Solution: A video tour of the kitchen. In order to show as much as possible, a wide angle lens was used, giving a much larger field of view than could normally be achieved. To show the relation of one spot in the kitchen to the other, an overhead shot acted as a transition between moving from one area to another. Background music was added to the transition shot to help the video flow. To give a visual reference to what was being said, titling with lines pointing to different items and areas was used.

Documentary on Downtown Eastside Building Renovation

Problem: The Central City Mission Foundation was converting an old, decrepit hotel in the downtown Eastside of Vancouver and needed to document the massive change that occurred. The project would need to occur over the period of a year.

Solution: The first step was to get establishing shots of the building from the start. The same locations were shots several times throughout the year so that their progress could be updated an time-lapsed. In a few seconds the viewer is able to see the change that occurred over the period of a year. The renovation process started before the filming project had been approved, so to show the earliest part of the renovation process, still photos were used in place of video. The visuals had to tell a story, but the audio had to tell a story as well. A custom sound track for the video was specially created by a local studio to match the music to the visuals. Additionally, a professional narrator guided the viewer through the story.

This is the short 3 minute version of the video. The 10 minute video aired on Shaw TV.
